I've not read the whole book yet, but the story already has me captivated. There's a lot of dialog in it and the spelling of the Irish dialects is quite the problem for the text to speech software. So it's best to read this one visually rather than listen to it. I'm glad this popular artifact of early 20th Century literature is being preserved and is available for the modern reader who enjoys these very readable antique stories. Century Magazine published this and many other appealing tales for the general market. It's Ireland in the hard times, told without whitewashing, but not the whole truth, of course, for the whole truth was not known in that time, and if it was, could not find a publisher were it actually written down. Read for enjoyment, as well as some, but not all, of the history of Irish survival during the famine and after.Product details

My Lady of the Chimney Corner Alexander Irvine 9781444679038 Books Reviews
Forget Angela's Ashes, This is the classic novel of the Irish. Set in Ulster, it describes how the Famine unlike the popular fallacy, hit poor Protestants as well as Catholics. The Author, Alexander Irvine became a Preacher and Union Organiser in North America towards the end of the 19th Century. This is the true story of his Co Antrim chilhood. A brilliant read and one to keep going back to. A true classic.
It was for my wife.It is one of her favourite books which belonged to my late mother. It was lent to someone & not returned,so she just wanted another copy.
I'm sure its a lovely tale but I was unable to read the language.
I thought it wonderful....Will read it again.. Much slower this time...
This short book encompassed all of Ireland's famine days and the resilience of a community. I am so glad I decided to read it. The main characters are people I would want near me.
This book speaks to one on several levels. If you have Irish heritage, then you must read to get a feeling of what they had to live through in poverty. It is also a lesson in Irish culture. But most of all it needs to be read for its enduring spiritual messages which ring as true today as 100 years ago when written.
